Course Description:
This course will highlight key factors that contribute to the development of osteoporosis, which can occur with advancing age or as a consequence of other health conditions and treatments that are associated with bone loss. The conditions that will be covered include cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, G.I. conditions, and certain medications. It will address the importance of maximizing and preserving bone strength during the young adult and middle-aged years. As exercise professionals and rehabilitation specialists, we can play an integral role with this target population in the prevention or delay of osteoporosis and fractures and help to keep our patients healthy, active, and independent for decades to come. We will review health and lifestyle factors that increase the risk of developing low bone density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) and fractures, and how to implement exercise interventions that promote bone health through resistance, impact, agility, and back strengthening exercises.
