Course Description:
Altered hip mechanics owing to inadequate strength of the gluteal musculature has been linked to several musculoskeletal conditions. Recent research has revealed that diminished corticomotor excitability of gluteus maximus (GMAX) may underlie impaired hip extensor strength and reduced use of the hip extensors during landing. There is also evidence that corticomotor excitability of GMAX can be improved with focused activation training. It is our contention that exercises that increase corticomotor excitability of GMAX may be superior in improving hip muscle performance to those that do not. The purpose of this session is to present a scientific approach to improving gluteal muscle performance using the principles of and motor learning and neuroplasticity Current research related to the neural contributions to gluteal muscle performance will be addressed. We also will present a targeted activation training program aimed at facilitating central nervous system adaptations with the end goal of increasing neuromuscular recruitment during strengthening and movement-based training.
