Course Description:
It is challenging to live with chronic pain and much more challenging to manage and treat patients with chronic pain. One in five people suffer from chronic pain (pain lasting for more than 3 months). Take a pause and think about it! Every fifth patient you treat will suffer from chronic pain. It could be a patient who had recent surgery, suffering from acute postoperative pain, but the patient might have been in pain for several years prior (classic categorization of chronic pain).
Chronic pain is troubling, distracting, and resistant to traditional therapy. So, how should we treat or manage chronic pain? What strategies should we use? What exactly is chronic pain or pain in general? How can we as therapists play a lead role in changing the lives of people living with chronic pain?
This course will delve into the understanding of pain: acute and chronic, along with unique distinct perspective, backed by evidence, of defining and classifying pain. The course will also dive into different models/theory of pain. Furthermore, this course will explore how people with chronic pain adapt and cope, especially the learning and changes occurring in their nervous system. Finally, we will explore the various tools and strategies that can be utilized to empower people living with chronic pain. This course will further strengthen the skills of clinicians to effectively manage patients with chronic pain.
