Course Description:
This course provides learners with evidence-informed approaches and strategies for the medical management and cancer rehabilitation of people living with and beyond (PLWB) sarcoma. Collectively, sarcomas are a rare type of cancer, yet complex, as there are nearly 100 subtypes that can occur anywhere in the body. Sarcoma is a cancer of connective tissue that can include bone, muscle, blood vessels, etc., which makes it difficult to screen for and is often diagnosed based on finding a tumor, pain, or other side effects. It is one of few cancers seen throughout the lifespan from childhood to older adults, and it has few risk factors for developing.
The treatment for sarcoma depends on the type, stage, and location. It can include surgery, including lymph node dissection, systemic therapy, and radiation. The potential functional impacting adverse effects vary as much as the types and treatments for sarcoma. Cardiotoxic chemotherapy is commonly used, often in high doses. Cancer rehabilitation is optimal to help survivors safely and effectively exercise and reduce additional adverse effects such as fatigue, weakness, deconditioning, and range of motion limitations. These impairments can significantly impact an individual's functional mobility and activity, transfers, sleep, occupations, and engagement in community and occupational roles. Clinicians' ability to assess and develop safe and effective therapeutic interventions to address this functional change is critical to improving the physical function and cognitive impact of sarcoma.
PLWB osteosarcoma typically undergoes complex orthopedic surgery that can result in amputation or limb-salvaging surgery. In addition to tumor removal, lymph node dissection and radiation result in a higher risk of developing lymphedema, bone fragility, and soft tissue restrictions. The complexity of their rehabilitation needs beyond musculoskeletal recovery will be taught in this course.
