Course Description:

Course Description:
Nicole has taken information from Adriaan Louw’s Two-Day Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE) Pain Course and her personal experience utilizing this information in the Acute Care Setting to share broadly with the Occupational and Physical Therapy Acute Care Teams at Michigan Medicine. The objective of this presentation is to help our inpatient therapists better understand how to apply it to the Acute Care Setting as the original course is Outpatient Centered. We have previously completed a 1-hour presentation on Acute Pain for the teams. This presentation builds on this information with the goal of helping therapists differentiate between types of Acute on Chronic versus Chronic Pain and providing treatment modalities specific to the type of pain identified.
Learning Objectives:
1.   Explain the physiological mechanisms underlying acute and chronic pain.
2.   Compare and describe differences in patient responses to acute versus chronic pain.
3.   Explain the concept and significance of pain neuroscience education (PNE), outline the PNE checklist, and discuss therapeutic interventions for pain management.
4.   Participants will demonstrate the ability to utilize the resources effectively to assess and manage different types of pain.
5.   Identify language strategies that encourage patient movement and engagement for improved chronic pain outcomes and increased participation in their daily occupations and activities.
