Course Description:
Adaptive Yoga Moves Any Body Training is designed to increase awareness and knowledge about how to instruct adaptive yoga to individuals with neuromuscular conditions, with an emphasis on MS and Parkinson’s Disease. This adaptive yoga course teaches the trainee how to instruct yoga poses in three dimensions; seated, standing, and in supine. Therefore, adaptive yoga is applicable to multiple settings of physical therapy including acute care, inpatient rehab, skilled nursing facilities, and outpatient therapy. Integration of yoga by physical therapists has shown to be an effective modality for improving balance and gait, reducing pain, increasing muscular strength, and improving posture and flexibility. In addition to physical benefits, integrating yoga into practice may help alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression and improve self efficacy. Trainees will gain confidence in their ability to meet the unique needs of their patients by incorporating the gift, art, and science of yoga. Physical therapists will learn how yoga can complement their patient treatment plans and learn how to adapt yoga to apply to patients in all stages of functional mobility. All attendees will gain an understanding of how Adaptive Yoga can impact the mind, body, and spirit and be offered as an umbrella for wellness.
