Course Description:
Course Description:
Physical therapists are natural educators, whether they’re teaching patients, mentoring students, or leading in-services for colleagues. However, most clinicians have had little or no formal training in planning and delivering effective instruction. This session answers the question: “If a physical therapist were asked to teach, how would they do it?” Participants will explore practical, evidence-informed teaching methods drawn from academic settings that clinicians can use immediately in clinical education. Topics include backward design, developing clear learning objectives, engaging learners, checking for understanding, and making content relevant to practice. Through real examples, hands-on activities, and peer discussion, clinicians will leave with tools to make their teaching more intentional, interactive, and effective, without needing a background in education.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the backward design framework's relevance to planning clinical in-services or educational content.
2. Create clear, outcome-based learning objectives tailored to clinical teaching situations.
3. Identify evidence-informed teaching strategies for content delivery.
4. Design a brief, focused in-service or educational session using best-practice teaching methods.
5. Reflect on their own teaching habits and identify opportunities to make their instruction more learner-centered and effective.
