Course Description:
Emerging evidence suggests that blood flow restriction (BFR) may offer a viable alternative to traditional moderate-to-high intensity exercise for people with neurologic conditions. Despite limited data supporting the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of BFR in neurologic populations, recent survey data indicate a growing trend among clinicians to incorporate BFR into neurorehabilitation protocols. This synchronous online educational session will first describe the underlying mechanisms behind BFR training and review the evidence in people with musculoskeletal conditions and healthy adults. Second, we will review evidence for BFR in people with neurologic conditions and discuss safety considerations and decision-making strategies relevant to rehabilitation practitioners considering the use of BFR in their patients with neurologic conditions. Third, we will discuss decision-making strategies and practical applications of BFR in people with neurologic conditions, using cases when applicable.
