Course Description:
Welcome to this learning activity on Physical Therapy: Drugs in the Workplace.
Healthcare professionals who use substances and/or alcohol during employment or arrive at work under the influence of substances or alcohol present substantial hazards to their safety and that of their colleagues. These hazards encompass reduced productivity and financial viability of the healthcare system, considerable peril to individuals receiving care, and extensive accountability concerns for healthcare organizations.
These hazards require mitigation and reduction to ensure a proficient and secure environment conducive to optimal care outcomes. Healthcare organizations that implement initiatives promoting and upholding a professional setting free from substances and/or alcohol can mitigate these hazards and contribute to improved outcomes for individuals receiving care.
Healthcare professionals must comprehend the hazards that substances and alcohol pose to themselves, to individuals receiving care, and to the healthcare system comprehensively. Delivering secure and efficacious care necessitates sobriety, enabling the healthcare professional to maintain sound judgment and execute appropriate decisions and interventions.
The healthcare organization must establish and uphold protocols that ensure healthcare professionals practice without the influence of substances and alcohol, thereby providing the highest quality of care and clinical outcomes.
