Course Description:

Course Description: The purpose of this course is to outline current best-practice in the rehabilitation of patients following acquired lower limb loss. Topics will span from early post-amputation care to prosthetic functional and gait training. Topics will include positioning, residual limb care and preparation for prosthesis, pain management, exercise modalities and functional/gait training. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn and administer pertinent functional measures and gain experience with different types of lower limb prosthetic systems via lab-based learning.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this program, the learner will be able to…
§ Describe the various etiologies and levels of lower limb amputation.
§ Improve understanding of the phases of rehabilitation for those with lower extremity amputation
§ Identify and apply evidence-based assessment tools
§ Analyze the biomechanical implications of lower limb loss on functional mobility and gait.
§ Demonstrate understanding in fitting, adjusting, maintenance, and training with prosthetic components.
§ Recognize and address common complications and challenges in amputee rehabilitation (e.g., phantom limb pain, mental health).
§ Formulate comprehensive, individualized rehabilitation plans for lower limb amputees, considering physical, psychosocial, and mobility goals.
