Background And Identification Of Practice Problem: Michigan’s Direct Access Provision of 2015, aimed to increase patient access to physical therapy (PT) and reduce wait times, has created arbitrary restrictions for patient access to therapy. This has created hurdles for patients and physical therapy (PT) as an autonomous profession.
Purpose: Therefore, this policy paper's purpose is to thoroughly analyze the Direct Access (DA) policy and understand why the Unrestricted Access policy, adopted in 20 states, has not yet been adopted in Michigan.
